Fiery shrapnel fragments lit up the treetops, skittering across branches until squelched by the storm. The freighter continued penetrating the thicket, violently jolting while making contact with elm trunks. Yellow ailerons crumbled across the canopy. The fuselage, shielded in smoke, ripped through vegetation like a meteorite. The debris field was hidden behind the forest wall, shielding the majority of the carnage behind miles of foliage.

Finally, the plane swooped over the foothills, vanishing from binocular view. The crash site appeared to be at the foot of the mountain. The rising smoke column would lead them right to it.

Evan lowered the binoculars. The unmistakable sound of a crash landing about a mile within the forest made him grimace. With all the commotion, he forgot that airport personnel would soon arrive at his position.

They’ll want to know what we’re doing here, no doubt. And what we know about the pterosaurs.

He dreaded the idea of explaining themselves to the Caruthers’ staff. They would have to move quickly if their mission was to continue uninterrupted. Otherwise, they would be saddled with an unnecessary interrogation while two pilots’ lives were at stake.

He failed to notice Toby’s vehicle parked just several yards away, headlights blurred behind the rainfall.

“Do you think they survived?” Mac asked.

“With any luck, maybe—”

Evan’s explanation was interrupted by a flurry of primordial cackles a hundred yards above.

The Pteranodons, motivated by their victory over the plane, cawed happily at the destruction of their foe. Both predators circled around at the foot of the runway, relishing in their triumph. Undeterred by the humans on the tarmac, the pair of hunters soared inland toward the wreckage.

Vile little things, aren’t you?

Evan watched as the two creatures slipped out of view behind the treetops. The large pterosaur—the one that carried Wendy—was absent, presumably still on the mountain.

“If the pilots are alive,” Evan gulped, “they won’t be for long. The Pteranodons appear to be investigating the crash site.”

The sound of a car door slam to his left made him turn. Toby clicked off the headlights, zipping up a rain slicker she grabbed from the backseat. She threw the hood over her head and hurried over, silhouetted by the red alarm lights of the traffic control tower.

“Jeez, Evan,” she shivered while rain drizzled from her hood. “You sure picked a good day to go dinosaur hunting. Fill me in. What’s going on?”

“First, did you bring them?”

“Yeah. In the back.”

“Great,” Evan replied, hustling around her to the rear of the vehicle. He cast a weary glance at the airport while popping the trunk. “Well, I’m sure you can already guess from what you’ve seen here it’s not going well. We ran into a few college kids in the woods. They’re pretty banged up.”

“What happened to them?” Toby asked, gritting her teeth.

“Park wardens showed up. Mac and I didn’t stick around for questions. We were pressed on time. Apparently, a woman was taken by the third Pteranodon. We haven’t met “him” yet. Anyway, they should be in safe hands by now, escorted off the park.
